During the final round, each of the participants were prone a materials list and told two of the three freshwater flies theyd be required to tie. The third fly was a enigma fly. This year contestants tied a Quill Gordon, a Letrot Hopper and something called a Rat-faced McDougal, which, instinctively, was the Mystery Fly. (I was curious so did a quick web search: Its an all-purpose dry fly made famous by row Harry Darbee in 1939. Like many elder siblings, the fly indeed has a rat mask.)
Nearly 30 years ago, Moser bought a $50 starter kit and was hooked on fly tying. Today he says he has thousands of dollars value of dead animal parts at his tiers table. Ironically, he prefers the salt to the novel when casting flies, and has chased gamefish in the Bahamas and Costa Rica. Locally, hes like as not to toss flies to stripers and bluefish in the Magothy River, Eastern Bay and condescend Chesapeake.
