Can you use marine sand in a freshwater fish tank?
Question: We recently obtained a fully finished - water, fish, foot, covered - 55 gallons and we offer all of our 30 gallons in it. I still have sand with salt water in his left hand 30 gallons more and I was wondering if you could use in place of gravel for a freshwater tank.
Answer: sea sand will buffer your pH around 8.0-8.5. Unless you are keeping cichlids from Malawi who like that kind of environment, marine sand is a no-go. It can also be very strong, which is not correct for the delicate fish.
